What a VIN decoder does
A Vehicle Identification Number is a 17-character identifier assigned to a vehicle. This tool queries NHTSA’s Vehicle Product Information Catalog (vPIC) and presents the vehicle information available for that VIN, such as make, model, model year, body class, engine, drive type, and plant details.
What information may be unavailable
VIN data is supplied by manufacturers and can vary by vehicle, production date, market, and reporting. A blank result does not necessarily mean a vehicle detail does not exist; it may not be included in the available record. We show only fields returned with useful data.
Where to find a VIN
Look through the windshield on the driver’s side of the dashboard first. You may also find it on the driver’s door-jamb label and in the vehicle title, registration, or insurance documents. The VIN should match everywhere. Our VIN guide explains the sections of a 17-character VIN.
VIN decoding is not a vehicle-history report
A VIN identifies a vehicle; decoding it does not prove condition, title status, ownership, accident history, theft status, mileage, or the open-recall status of that individual VIN. For a used-car decision, use the decode as a first check, review recall information by vehicle configuration, and follow a practical used-car checklist.
